The annual workshops for teachers put on by e-Learning Jamaica Company are highly appreciated by teachers, as could be seen by the turnout at one held for math teachers at the Alhambra Inn in St Andrew in March.

The workshop conducted by Mrs. Dawn Thompson-Clarke, head of the Mathematics department at St Andrew High School for Girls, along with Seymour Hamilton, Math Specialist from the Ministry of Education, was well received by the educators.

This was expected by Mrs. Thompson-Clarke who has been conducting workshops since 2008.

“Our evaluation shows that the teachers look forward to these workshops every year because they benefit greatly from them.  We find innovative ways of showing them how to motivate students to learn difficult topics using technology”, she told e-Learning Jamaica Today.

The workshop focused on Circle Theorem, a topic in the math syllabus in which students performed poorly over the years, according to statistics from the CXC website.

We’re using the Geogebra software to show teachers how they can overcome some of the difficulties in bringing across this topic,” Mrs. Thompson-Clarke explained.

The workshops, held annually in Kingston, Montego Bay, Mandeville and Ocho Rios, evolved out of seminars to inform teachers about the equipment and resources provided under e-LJam’s High School Project.

The workshops are expected to end following the handover of the High School Project to the Ministry of Education soon.
