Charlie Smith High School has been added to the Tablets in Schools (TIS) Pilot Project, making it the 39th educational institution in the Project for which implementation began in the last school year.

Teachers at Charlie Smith and neighboring Trench Town High are currently being trained in the use of the tablets, and they along with their students are expected to receive tablets in September.

Located in Arnett Gardens in South St Andrew, Charlie Smith High is currently undergoing a restructuring and re-branding exercise. Charlie Smith and neighboring Trench Town High are being merged, with former students and some teachers of Trench Town to be relocated to Charlie Smith.

The merged institution is expected to have more than 1000 students and over 60 teachers. It is expected that the former Trench Town High will become a training institution for young adults.

Principal of Charlie Smith High Garth Gayle was excited to have his school added to the TIS Project.

“We are looking forward to rolling out the programme in September, and I know it will enhance curriculum delivery and the ability of students to access education with the use of technology”, Mr. Gayle told e-Learning Jamaica Today.

“We are seeking to make Charlie Smith one of the top high schools in Jamaica, and such initiatives as the Tablets In Schools Project will go a long way in assisting us to meet that goal.”

Under the TIS Pilot Project, some 25,000 students and teachers received tablet devices in the last academic year. The Pilot continues in September which will be the first full school year for its implementation.
